High school basketball bracket

A district tournament is a scheduling problem before it is a bracket: 16 teams means 15 games, and a school gym holds roughly eight of them in a day.

Editing is designed for desktop. On this screen you can view the bracket; open the tools below if you need to change something.

Everything stays editable: type your own team names, set scores and dates, then export the bracket as an image — a PNG in three sizes, no watermark.

The arithmetic that decides the format

Sixteen teams in a single elimination bracket is 15 games over four rounds. With 32-minute games (four eight-minute quarters) plus warm-ups, a single gym realistically holds eight to ten games in a school day — so a 16-team bracket is a two-day event, or a one-day event with two gyms.

If it has to fit in one day on one court, the honest answer is a smaller field: eight teams is 7 games, which fits comfortably, and the bracket is the schedule.

Seeding from the regular season

Type the teams in seed order and the bracket fills with the standard draw — 1 vs 16, 8 vs 9, 4 vs 13, 5 vs 12 — so the top seeds are spread across the bracket instead of meeting in the first round.

Where two conferences meet, one workable convention is to alternate them through the seed list so conference rivals can only meet late. That is a manual reorder of the list, and it is worth doing before you generate the bracket rather than after.

Third place is not a formality in school sport

A third-place game is one extra match, and it gives the two beaten semi-finalists a second meaningful game. One toggle adds it, and the bracket then has 16 matches instead of 15.

Scores, dates and venues can be filled in as the day runs, and the share link puts the live bracket on the phone of whoever is running the desk.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a 16-team basketball tournament take?
Fifteen games plus warm-ups. One gym in one school day is usually too tight, so plan two days or two courts; eight teams is 7 games and fits one day.
How should I seed a district tournament?
By regular-season record or conference standing: type the teams in that order and the standard seeding is applied. If you have no ranking, use the shuffle for a visible random draw.
Should we play a third-place game?
Many school tournaments do, because it gives two more teams a second game on finals day. It is one toggle and one extra match.
